GLIPS REFERRAL SERVICE DEMONSTRATES PUBLIC APPEAL

The GLIPS Executive office receives dozens of telephone inquiries each month from prospective patients and their families who are seeking psychiatric services.  Because of the low response rate to the referral service application included in our last Newsletter, we are repeating the mailing in this issue. It is a valuable benefit for our dues paying members to be listed in our referral database.  Because the referral application allows for specificity, it serves as a screening instrument whereby one can clearly indicate one’s preferences, including areas of one’s specific clinical interests, fee policies, etc. The impressive number of referral requests to the GLIPS office demonstrates the appeal of our referral service, a vital resource for the public, which facilitates the search for a good fit between patient and psychiatrist. The referral service highlights to our community that GLIPS, with its deep reservoir of highly skilled psychiatric specialists, is a visible, viable, accessible, and available enterprise that can rapidly respond to those who request our services.  Please take a few moments to complete the referral service form, mail it to the GLIPS office, and boost your professional visibility within GLIPS and the wider community.  The referral service application will also be available online at our website (longislandpsych.org) in the Member Resources section.

 SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL MEETING

On Thursday, April 19, 2007, over 100 GLIPS members and guests were present at the GLIPS Annual Meeting to hear Thomas Insel, MD, Director, National Institute of Mental Health, present on “The Future of Psychiatry:  A Modest Proposal.”  To quote GLIPS President-Elect, Louis M. Najarian, MD, “(the) proposal was hardly modest, but more profound...”  Those who attended will attest, I am certain, to the intensity of the presentation.  The audience sat in rapt attention as Dr. Insel presented his vision of what the future holds in store for psychiatry as a science."

The meeting also afforded those present the opportunity to thank GLIPS President, Jane V. Perr, MD, for her dedicated leadership of GLIPS as President (2005-2007).  During her term in office, Dr. Perr worked tirelessly to increase resident membership and to involve International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in GLIPS.  She has been extremely successful in both areas!  Dr. Perr has left an indelible mark on the Society.
